“THE ISLAND NEEDS SO MUCH, BUT WHAT WILL THEY GIVE US?”

Center Aquidneck Manifesto

WE LIVE ON AQUIDNECK ISLAND. We do not have another home! We are here all year! Here we are!

WE ARE CREATIVE. We curate time and environment. We tell stories. We use our imaginations. We learn our histories. It’s how we have fun and meet people. It’s how we express enthusiasm for life and contribute to our community.

OUR WORK IS FREE AND HAS VALUE. We explore the boundaries of creativity, who gets to imagine, the time we devote, and all assumptions about “good art” and expertise. We don’t sell tickets or charge for participation, but we need time and attention. Everyone is invited.

AQUIDNECK ISLAND IS DEEPLY INTERESTING AND WEIRD! There are three cities. Two were founded in the 1600s by religious dissidents escaping other religious dissidents. One of them was a woman! There are mansions -- old and new. Bob Dylan went electric here. The first American circus was here. There’s a fort that saw no wars here. We are a coastal community at a time of sea level rise. We only have one urgent care and one movie screen left. We know where our water comes from. Mega-Yachts. Ocean Drive. Jai-lai. America's Cup. Ida Lewis. Water Brothers. God’s Little Acre. John Stevens. Doris Duke. Canonicus and Miantonomi. Aquidneck has more to say than we will ever comprehend, and we are so much more than the glossy spreads in the tourist traps. Though Newport is America’s First Resort, for so many of us who live here it is our last. How could we not make creative and civic work with this place?

COLLABORATIVE CREATION IS PREPPING FOR THE FUTURE. We perform big emotions, imagined events, collective movement, jokes, stunts, songs, talks and everything else so that we know how to care for each other when things really go sideways. We watch each other. We focus. We turn off our phones and down-shift from Robot to Human again. We are all sitting around this fire. Who’s turn is it to entertain? We’re ready to listen.
